The Minnesota Department of Transportation and the municipality of Piney in Manitoba, Canada, will permanently close the Piney-Pinecreek Border Airport (48Y) on Dec. 27, 2024.

The general aviation airport, located just west of Highway 89 about 20 miles northwest of Roseau, operated under an international agreement between MnDOT and the Piney, Manitoba, Canada.

“The airport had very low use and faced large maintenance expenses, including runway, apron, and terminal reconstruction,” state officials said.

The international agreement to operate the airport expires Dec. 26 and will not be renewed by either airport owner, state officials added.

Several other airports nearby serve the Northwest Minnesota general aviation community, including Warroad Memorial International Airport (KRRT), Roseau Municipal Airport (KROX), Stephen Municipal Airport (D41), and Warren Municipal Airport (D37).

State officials note that all of those airports have more annual aircraft operations and support existing based aircraft.
