Kuching represents the beating heart of Malaysian Borneo, the fusion of cultural richness, intriguing local cuisine and seemingly never ending lush landscapes; they combine to create somewhere that once you’ve visited, you’ll be sure to return. Well, that’s exactly how we felt after our first ever trip to the capital of Sarawak, our maiden Kuching vacation will certainly not be the last time we experience this enchanting corner of Malaysian Borneo. We checked into the newest luxury hotel in the city centre, before heading to the coast to spend time at a simply stunning boutique resort. In between exploring the old town and soaking up the coastal vibes, we squeezed in a round of ‘jungle golf’, checked out the largest museum in Malaysia and marvelled at the untamed wilderness of Bako National Park. Of course, for those of you that know us well, we made sure to enjoy some of the best vegan food on offer during our time in Kuching too.
City centre luxury with Sheraton Kuching
This brand new city centre hotel is an ideal base for for anyone who enjoys modern luxury and convenience. Sheraton Kuching is located right in the heart of the city, with many rooms and suites boasting excellent views of the Sarawak River. The contemporary and stylish design throughout was to our liking, as was our spacious junior suite which came with all mod cons. We are always happy to have a coffee machine, and even happier to have a bath which we’re both present in our suite which also boasts those river views over the city rooftops. Our short stay didn’t allow us time to dine at the hotel, but we were excited to see a number of clearly labelled plant based options on both the room service menu, also at Nomadics which is the all day dining restaurant on the ground floor. The Sheraton Kuching is the newest luxury hotel in Kuching and most certainly has a prime location, this makes it an excellent choice for both leisure and business travellers seeking both comfort and culture in Kuching.
Immersive education at Borneo Cultures Museum
To enjoy an educational and informative introduction to Borneo’s rich history and vibrant culture, the Borneo Cultures Museum is an absolute must. The largest museum in Malaysia (and the second largest in Southeast Asia) is an impressive building spanning four floors that are filled with interactive exhibits that display the diverse ethnic backgrounds, traditions, and ecosystems unique to Sarawak and Malaysian Borneo. Head there to learn about the indigenous tribes, explore the exhibits on rainforest biodiversity, and enjoy the multiple collections of archaeological artefacts. The engaging and high tech displays combine to offer an educational experience that allows visitors to build greater appreciation for Sarawak’s rich heritage.
Undiscovered paradise at Cove 55
From the moment we arrived at Cove 55, which is located just 30 minutes from Kuching, we knew we were going to enjoy our stay. Cove 55 offers a serene escape for travellers looking to unwind in a secluded paradise. This boutique resort which is set against the backdrop of Mount Santubong, combines modern luxury with natural beauty. Cove 55 provided a peaceful atmosphere where we were able to enjoy private beach access, the stunning infinity pool, and breathtaking mountain vistas. Our spacious Mangrove Villa was the perfect retreat, whether sitting on the expansive decking area soaking up the unique sounds of the mangroves, soaking in our bath tub after a long day of luxury living, or enjoying the mist relaxing of sleeps in our supremely comfortable bed, we felt very much at our home away from home within this hidden gem of a resort in Sarawak.

The unique Matang Jungle Golf
Matang Jungle Golf is a truly unique golf course located just a short drive from Cove 55 who own and operate the course for their guests. The nine hole course is set amidst tropical rainforest and stunning natural surroundings, offering golfers the chance to play a round surrounded by pristine jungle and diverse wildlife. Designed for players of all skill levels with challenging terrain and well placed hazards, Matang Jungle Golf provides the chance to escape from urban life with your friends or family. Creative cuisine at Kechala
Kechala is the culinary heart and soul of Cove 55, where guests or non guests can enjoy the relaxed ambiance and a unique dining experience. The menu highlights a subtle blend of local ingredients and Sarawakian flavours, with traditional dishes presented alongside international dishes ensuring all diners are very well catered for. We were delighted to find clearly labelled vegan options on the menu at Kechala which always puts a smile on our face.
These creative plant based options included a fresh and fragrant tofu ceviche, and a truly divine vegan chocolate cake which was simply perfect. Executive Chef Mario has certainly worked hard with his team, elevating the dining experience and putting Kechala firmly on the culinary map in Kuching.
For the ultimate Kuching city escape, head to Bako National Park which is just 37 km from the bustling capital of Sarawak. The oldest and most accessible national park in Sarawak is famed for the diverse ecosystems and intriguing wildlife that calls the region home. Enjoy the village views on the 30 minute drive from Kuching to the jetty in Bako Village, before taking a scenic 20 minute boat ride to arrive in the heart of the park. Explore the multiple trails and discover secluded and rugged beaches, waterfalls, mangroves and scenic viewpoints, whilst making sure to keep your eyes peeled for sightings of proboscis monkeys, bearded pigs, and countless species of tropical birds.
We only scratched the surface of what Kuching has to offer, and are already planning a return trip to enjoy even more of the eclectic mix of experiences that can be found in the area. Perhaps we will return for the annual Rainforest World Music Festival, or to spend more time exploring the national parks. We may even return with our golf clubs to enjoy a round at Damai Golf and Country Club. What’s sure is that we will return to this unique and often overlooked destination that most certainly has something for everyone.
