'A Court of Thorns and Roses' TV Series Dead at Hulu

‘A Court of Thorns and Roses’ TV Series Dead at Hulu

Hulu’s TV adaptation of Sarah J. Maas’s wildly popular romantasy book series “A Court of Thorns and Roses” is officially scrapped.

Produced by Disney’s 20th Television, the project has been in the development stage at Hulu (also a Disney property) since March 2021. Maas partnered on the “ACOTAR” (as the book series is known to fans) TV scripts alongside “Outlander” creator Ronald D. Moore.

Not many updates have been given on the show since, with both the writers and actors strikes of Summer 2023 putting a pause on almost all scripted production and development.

Last February, TVLine reported that the “A Court of Thorns and Roses” TV series was no longer in development at Hulu and that it was also not being shopped to other platforms. At that time, sources told Variety the show was technically still in the works but no longer in active development and Disney’s 20th Television had the rights through late Summer 2025.

Maas is looking to take the TV adaptation rights for “ACOTAR” out to a different studio and platform once the option has expired at Disney, sources close to the project tell Variety.

20th Television and Hulu declined comment. Representatives for Maas have not yet responded to Variety‘s request.

The first installment of the “A Court of Thorns and Roses” novel series, which centers around 19-year-old huntress Feyre Archeron, was published in May 2015. After murdering a faerie wolf in the woods, she is dragged to the magical land of Prythian by Tamlin, who serves as one of the seven High Lords of Prythian. While spending time with Tamlin at his estate in the spring court, Feyre slowly comes to learn that everything she has learned about the faerie world is a lie.

Following the success of the first novel, Maas released four sequels titled “A Court of Mist and Fury,” “A Court of Wings and Ruin,” “A Court of Frost and Starlight” and “A Court of Silver Flames.” A sixth book in the series is planned with no release date set as of now.
