Air Canada has disabled the moving map functionality on its Boeing 737 MAX twinjets after passengers observed that Israel had been replaced with the words “Palestinian Territories”.
Passengers shared their discovery on social media platforms including X and LinkedIn.
Air Canada is blaming an “IFE display issue” and says other carriers “using the same system” are also affected.
In a statement provided to Runway Girl Network, it says:
Air Canada has been made aware of a display issue with the interactive map when set at certain resolutions on the IFE systems of its B737 aircraft.
The issue has affected other carriers using the same system and we are working with the third-party provider on a remedy.
In the interim, the map function has been temporarily inactivated on affected aircraft.
It is not immediately clear how and why the change occurred.
Thales provides the embedded inflight entertainment system for Air Canada’s 737 MAX twinjets. Thales could not be immediately reached for comment. Air Canada did not disclose the name of the third party.
