India’s national carrier Air India, owned by the Tata Group, is reportedly in talks with Airbus and Boeing for a significant new aircraft order that could include around 200 additional narrowbody jets, according to industry sources quoted by Reuters.
According to Reuters, news of a possible new order circulated during the 81st International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Delhi.
The order could involve hundreds of aircraft of different sizes, according to industry sources who spoke to Reuters.
The talks are also said to expand on previously reported discussions regarding an additional set of large widebody aircraft, the sources added.
The exact number of narrowbody jets under the new order was not immediately clear, but two of the sources estimated it to be in the hundreds, with one stating that it involved a provisional total of 200 narrowbody aircraft, the Reuters report continued.
Airbus and Boeing both declined to comment, according to the report. When asked by AeroTime at the IATA AGM 2025, Air India CEO Campbell Wilson also refused to comment, stating: “Complete speculation. We don’t comment on speculation.”
In 2023, Air India placed a historic order for 470 planes with Boeing and Airbus to speed up its growth plans after being taken over by the Tata Group. In December 2024, the Indian airline ordered an additional 100 Airbus aircraft.
