Airlines halt flights in Middle East after Israel strikes

Several airlines have canceled flights in the airspace above Israel, Iran, Iraq and Jordan on June 13, 2025, following Israel’s major overnight airstrikes on 100 military and nuclear sites in Iran.

As of June 13, 2025, real-time flight tracking website Flightradar24 shows no air traffic over Israel, Iran, Jordan and Iraq, as all four countries have shut down their airspace due to massive Israeli overnight airstrikes across Iran.

A nine-second video posted on X by Flightradar24 shows that the airspace in the region now appears to be empty, with no aircraft flying through.

Eastern Iraq, close to the Iranian border, has one of the busiest air corridors in the world. Dozens of flights travel between Europe and the Gulf, with many routes connecting Asia to Europe. As a result, several airlines have canceled flights that pass through the region.

Emirates, the biggest airline in the Middle East, has cancelled flights to and from Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Iran. In a statement on Emirates’ official website, the airline stated that this will impact eight flights on June 13, 2025, four flights on June 14, 2025, and four flights on June 15, 2025.

On June 13, 2025, Israel’s flag carrier EL AL announced in a statement that, following the closure of Israeli airspace, EL AL and its subsidiary Sun D’Or International Airlines had canceled all their flights.

“EL AL and Sundor flights scheduled to depart up to and including June 30, 2025, are currently closed for new bookings in the booking systems,” the statement read. “This is until the security situation becomes clearer and with the aim of providing solutions for Israelis whose flights were canceled.”

Due to the emerging situation in the region, Air India announced that the airline had decided to cancel 16 scheduled flights in Iran’s airspace, “in view of the safety of passengers,” adding that the airline is making every effort to minimize “this unforeseen disruption”.

Qatar Airways announced that it has temporarily cancelled flights to Iran, Iraq and Syria. Qatar said in a statement that the affected airports in Iran include: Imam Khomeini Airport (IKA), Mashhad Airport (MHD) and Shiraz Airport (SYZ).

In Iraq, the affected airports are Baghdad Airport (BGW), Erbil Airport (EBL), Basra Airport (BSR), Sulaymaniyah Airport (ISU) and Najaf Airport (NJF). The airline also mentioned that flights to Damascus Airport (DAM) in Syria will be cancelled until the end of June 14, 2025.

Meanwhile, ITA Airways announced on X that, due to the current circumstances, Lufthansa Group airlines have decided to suspend flights to and from Tel Aviv scheduled up and until July 31.

“ITA Airways will extend the suspension of Tel Aviv flights until July 31, including flights AZ809 and AZ815 scheduled on August 1st,” the statement continued.
