How close can a couple get? Real-life spouses Alison Brie and Dave Franco venture beyond personal boundaries in Neon‘s first trailer for “Together,” a body-horror spin on codependency.
“Together” was one of the bigger hits of this year’s edition of the Sundance Film Festival, premiering in the event’s Midnight section to raves and revulsion. The horror film, from writer-director Michael Shanks in his feature debut, was one of the few selections at this year’s fest to spark a bidding war. One source told Variety that the final price tag came out above $17 million, making it one of the biggest deals in the history of Sundance. A24 and other studios were also in the running to pick up the title.
In his review from the fest, Variety chief film critic Owen Gleiberman wrote that “audiences should have fun with ‘Together,’ a body-horror movie about a serious thing — love — that never takes itself too seriously.”
After acquiring the feature, Neon set an August 1 theatrical release date. The indie distributor has previously forged horror success in the summertime with last year’s “Longlegs,” director Osgood Perkins’ low-budget occult procedural that earned more than $74 million in North America and $126 million globally.
Though a large degree of the fun to “Together” is derived from the novelty of its stars being married in real life, Brie and Franco have worked together plenty times before. They co-starred together in “The Little Hours,” “The Disaster Artist,” “Horse Girl” and “The Rental.” Additionally, Brie co-wrote the script for “Horse Girl,” while Franco made his directorial debut with “The Rental.” The couple’s last filmic collaboration was 2023’s “Somebody I Used to Know,” which they co-scripted; Brie starred and Franco directed.
