Acclaimed television creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino will be honored with the prestigious Creator Tribute at the Second Annual Gotham Television Awards, celebrating their new upcoming comedy “Étoile.”
The awards ceremony will take place live and in person on Monday, June 2, at Cipriani Wall Street in New York City and will also be livestreamed on Variety’s YouTube channel.
Established in 2024, the Creator Tribute recognizes trailblazing artists whose innovative work has profoundly shaped the television landscape. Sherman-Palladino and Palladino, the creative duo behind critically acclaimed series such as “Gilmore Girls” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” are being celebrated for their enduring impact on the medium and for continually pushing the boundaries of television storytelling.
“From their revolutionary narrative approach on ‘Roseanne’ – where they helped shape the bold, character-driven storytelling that redefined sitcoms – to the cultural phenomenon of ‘Gilmore Girls’ and the award-winning brilliance of ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,’ Amy and Daniel have consistently pushed the boundaries of television storytelling,” said Jeffrey Sharp, executive director of The Gotham Film & Media Institute. “Because New York has played a starring role in some of their most celebrated work, this tribute will be an especially meaningful occasion for The Gotham’s creative community.”
The honor comes just weeks after the debut of their latest project, “Étoile,” a new comedy-drama series premiering April 24 on Prime Video. Set in New York City and Paris, “Étoile” follows the dancers and artistic staff of two world-renowned ballet companies as they swap their most talented stars in a daring bid to save their institutions. Sherman-Palladino and Palladino serve as co-creators, writers and directors of the eight-episode series, which stars Luke Kirby, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Lou de Laâge and Gideon Glick.
Reflecting on the upcoming honor, the pair offered their trademark wit: “We still can’t believe that we have been allowed to make our living telling stories while working out our personal issues on screen for all to see,” they said in a joint statement. “The fact that we are now being honored by The Gotham is like icing on a very fancy cake.”
Sherman-Palladino began her television career writing for “Roseanne,” earning Emmy, Peabody and Writers Guild Award recognition. She went on to create “Gilmore Girls” in 2000, which became a defining series for the WB and was later revived on Netflix as “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.” She also created “Bunheads” and, of course, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” which garnered an impressive 22 Emmy Awards during its run.
Palladino’s career spans from early work on “Who’s the Boss?” to key producing and writing roles on “Roseanne” and “Family Guy.”
The Creator Tribute was first awarded in 2024 to “The Crown” creator Peter Morgan. Last year’s inaugural Gotham Television Awards also celebrated standout series including “Baby Reindeer,” “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” and “Colin from Accounts.”
