Anitta has released “Romeo,” her first solo single this year, and a follow-up to her Grammy and Latin Grammy-nominated, “Funk Generation” album. An artist known for her work across numerous genres, the Brazilian star makes a return to reggaeton with “Romeo,” produced by Subelo NEO (Bad Bunny, Eladio Carrión, Mora).
Just in time for Valentines Day, the sensual song was released Thursday with a music video that includes narration from Puerto Rican singer Lenny Tavárez. A modern day retelling of “Romeo and Juliet,” the video for “Romeo” see Anitta playing the titular character, wearing silver armor and gigantic feathered wings. Juliet, meanwhile, is meant to be played by Larissa, Anitta’s real name, in a more shy and introspective role.
Anitta is ramping up for a busy year — she’s scheduled to return to Coachella campgrounds for the second time in her global career. She will also be the subject of a new Netflix documentary titled “Larissa: The Other Side of Anitta,” helmed by João Wainer and Pedro Cantelmo. “Anitta is the superhero, Larissa is the human being,” Rebeca León, CEO and founder of Lionfish Entertainment, says in the teaser trailer.
“This is the first time the public will get to see the Larissa that exists behind Anitta, without any filters,” Anitta said of the film in a statement. “I gave so much of myself for Anitta to exist. Moments of connection with myself became increasingly rare and brief. But this came at a high cost – physically and mentally. Over the nearly 15 years of my career, I dedicated myself to creating a strong, independent, and unbeatable persona. Now, it’s time to show Larissa intimately, through the lens of someone special who knew me before I even thought of becoming Anitta. The film is beautiful, emotional, and honest. I believe it will surprise a lot of people.”
