Archer begins piloted flight test of Midnight eVTOL: video


Archer Aviation has launched the next phase of its Midnight flight test campaign, after successfully conducting a piloted flight that demonstrated the vertical and conventional takeoff and landing capabilities of its electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.  

The flight was carried out by Archer’s Chief Test Pilot Jeff Greenwood and included conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL), showcasing the robustness and versatility of Midnight’s landing gear and flight control systems. The aircraft reached speeds of up to 200 km/h (125 mph) and flew at altitudes exceeding 460 meters (1,500 feet) above ground level. 

“This phase builds on years of autonomous flight testing that validated our 12 tilt-6 VTOL configuration,” said Adam Goldstein, CEO and founder of Archer. “Midnight’s CTOL and VTOL capabilities are a strong differentiator for us, as they enable flexible, safe operations across diverse environments.” 

In the coming weeks, Archer’s test pilots will focus on validating Midnight’s flight control responsiveness, stability, and aerodynamic performance.  

Data gathered during these flights will support certification activities with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) in the United Arab Emirates, where Archer is also seeking commercial deployment opportunities. In late April 2025, the company received approval to convert the Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal helipad into a hybrid heliport for helicopters and eVTOL aircraft. 

Greenwood, who previously served as a test pilot for Bell Textron and flew combat missions during his 13-year career in the US Marine Corps, praised the aircraft’s handling characteristics. 

“Flying Midnight felt just like flying the simulator—everything responded exactly as we trained for,” Greenwood said. “It’s a testament to the team’s engineering rigor and focus on safety.” 

Archer is targeting 2025 for Midnight’s commercial entry into service, positioning the aircraft as a short-range, sustainable air mobility solution for urban and regional transport.
