Austria picks Leonardo M-346FA jets as successor to Saab 105

Austria has decided to procure twelve Leonardo M-346FA jets to replace the retired Saab 105 training aircraft as part of a government-to-government agreement with Italy.

On December 28, 2024, Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner confirmed the purchase, which aligns with the recommendation of the Austrian General Staff and falls within the budget approved in 2022 under the “ÖBH 2032+” defense plan.

The agreement will also benefit the Austrian economy through industrial offsets, according to the Austrian Air Force.

“This cooperation is further proof of the good cooperation and friendship between Italy and Austria. My special thanks go to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who made a significant contribution to the conclusion of this agreement,” said Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer.

Tanner emphasized that the acquisition will address critical capability gaps in Austria’s air force, enabling domestic pilot training and enhancing air defense.

The M-346FA is a variant of the M-346 Master advanced training aircraft. Produced by Leonardo, this multi-role aircraft features seven external hardpoints for various munitions and equipment. With a speed of Mach 1.15 and a range of 1,800 kilometers (1,120 miles), the M-346FA is suitable for close air support, tactical reconnaissance, and air policing, making it a cost-effective solution for modern defense needs.
