The South Korean box office saw “Captain America: Brave New World” retain the top spot for a second consecutive weekend, though its earnings declined. Meanwhile, animated horror thriller “Exorcism Chronicles: The Beginning” debuted in second place.
According to Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council, “Captain America: Brave New World” remained in first place with KRW3.1 billion ($2.2 million), accounting for 44% of the market share. The Marvel blockbuster, which follows Sam Wilson as he steps into the Captain America mantle, attracted 316,146 admissions over the weekend and has a cumulative total of $9.2 million.
Debuting in second place, “Exorcism Chronicles: The Beginning” earned $739,664 over the weekend with 108,090 admissions. The film, directed by Kim Dong-chul, follows Father Park, a doctor-turned-priest excommunicated for performing exorcisms. He is called upon by a monk from a secretive temple to protect a powerful child from a corrupt master, forcing him to confront his inner demons. The film released on 841 screens, capturing 14.65% of the weekend’s box office and its cumulative earnings stand at $794,300.
Another new release, “You Are the Apple of My Eye,” landed in third with $435,276, taking 8.62% of the market share. The romantic drama directed by Cho Young-myoung, a remake of the 2011 Taiwanese film of the same name, revolves around a group of students at a private school who have a crush on the star pupil. The film was presented on 709 screens, accounting for 8.62% of the market share. The film drew 68,604 viewers over the weekend, accumulating $448,020.
Musical romance “Secret: Untold Melody,” which has been holding strong since its late January release, placed fourth with $239,067. It has now grossed $5.2 million. In fifth place, “Paddington in Peru” opened with $216,432, capturing 4.28% of the market. The family adventure film saw 34,804 admissions over the weekend, reaching a cumulative total of $295,146.
Further down, “Hitman 2” continued its steady decline, placing sixth with $203,070 and 30,173 admissions. The action-comedy sequel has now amassed $16.6 million since its January debut.
Hideo Nakata’s Japanese supernatural drama “The Supernatural Sweet Shop The Movie” made its way into the top 10 with $108,336 and 17,868 admissions, securing seventh place. Its cumulative earnings now stand at $152,860.
“The Substance” continued to show staying power in eighth place with $120,610. The film has earned a total of $3.4 million. Awards season darling “The Brutalist” took ninth place with $96,479, reaching a cumulative total of $372,052.
Rounding out the top 10, Japanese anime “Detective Conan: The Fourteenth Target” earned $69,019, bringing its total to $449,913.
