Brussels Airlines unveils Atomium-themed A320 aircraft

Brussels Airlines has unveiled the latest special livery in its ‘Belgian Icons’ series.

The new livery features the Atomium, the atom-shaped monument which, since the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair, has become one of the best-known sights in the Belgian capital.

This design was selected in a public competition that launched in August 2024 and received some 900 submissions.

These were narrowed down to five, after an iterative selection process including a popular ballot which drew more than 50,000 votes. The winning design, the work of Belgian architect Thomas Faes, was announced in November 2024 after the deliberations of a panel which included Brussels Airlines CEO, Dorothea von Boxberg, as well as several personalities from the world of culture and the arts.

The result of this creative process, some 400 liters of paint and 2,400 hours of work later, has finally become a reality, with the aircraft in question, an Airbus A320 (registration OO-SNM) being officially presented at an event that took place at the Brussels Airlines Maintenance & Engineering hangar.

As is the case of others in the Brussels Airlines ‘Belgian Icons’ series, such as the Tintin, Smurfs or René Magritte-themed aircraft, the cabin of this A320 has also been decorated with references to the ‘Atomium’ and its construction process.

The first revenue flight of the aircraft, between Brussels-Zaventem (BRU) and Prague (PRG) is planned for March 27, 2025.
