Cellulloid Dreams Takes Sales on Shen Ko-Shang’s ‘Deep Quiet Room’

Paris-based sales company Celluloid Dreams has taken international distribution rights to Taiwanese director Shen Ko-Shang’s drama “Deep Quiet Room,” starring Ariel Lin and Joseph Chang.

“Deep Quiet Room” – which has been a standout at the Asian and European co-production markets including Busan’s Asian Contents and Film Market – marks the feature film debut of Shen, a former artistic director of the Taipei Film Festival who previously made several well-received shorts and docs.

“After his pregnant wife Yi-ting unexpectedly committed suicide, Ming decides to take care of his father-in-law, only to find out the unbearable truth of Yi-ting’s family that leads to her death,” reads the synopsis.

Lin is known across Asia for her roles in hit Taiwan television dramas “It Started With a Kiss,” “In Time With You” and, most recently, “Imperfect Us.” Taiwanese heartthrob Chang recently starred in TV miniseries “Coolie,” in which he played a Chinese rebel who participated in the Taiping Rebellion against the Qing Emperor.

“The themes discussed in ‘Deep Quiet Room’ — gender relations, the journey of love and deprivation, the true meaning of family and the powerlessness of victims — are universal,” Shen said in his director’s statement. “These heartbreaking stories exist in every country, yet when you close your eyes and see a face that makes you want to give all your love, you find a good reason to live.”

The film, which is co-written by Shang and Lu Hsin-Chih, is edited by Poland’s Przemysław Chruścielewski (“Corpus Christi”), while the score is by regular Terrence Malick collaborator Hanan Townshend and the director of photography is Chen Ta-Pu (“We Are Champions”).

“Celluloid Dreams is thrilled to support such an ambitious and captivating project as ‘Deep Quiet Room,’ which aligns perfectly with the DNA of films we distribute,” said Celluloid Dreams CEO Saliah Guemraoui in a statement. “We are also honored to begin the collaboration with the producers Wind Rises Entertainment, Oxygen Film and Flash Forward Entertainment of Taiwan and continue the one that began with ‘The Book of Vision’ with Italy’s Citrullo International.”

“Deep Quiet Room,” which is now completed, is a Taiwan-Italy co-production produced by Sylvia Yea-Chun Shih (Wind Rises Entertainment), Arthur Yu-Ning Chu (Oxygen Films), Patrick Mao Huang (Flash Forward Entertainment), Carlo S. Hintermann and Gerardo Panichi (Citrullo International).
