BEIJING, April 30 (Reuters) – China’s coastguard said it carried out law enforcement patrols in waters around the disputed Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea on Wednesday, amid tensions over the area with the Philippines.
The coastguard said it had strengthened patrols since the beginning of April, and carried out tracking, surveillance and interception operations “in accordance with laws and regulations”.

It added that it would safeguard China’s “territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests”.
The Philippine embassy in Beijing did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment.
