Creator Steven Knight Wants the ‘Peaky Blinders’ Movie ‘in Cinemas’

While “Peaky Blinders” had its heyday on the small screen, series creator and writer Steven Knight says his feature adaptation belongs in movie theaters.

“I really want the ‘Peaky’ fans who have been a big part of this to be watching it all together in one building,” Knight told The Playlist. “The communication has all been virtual, but I do want this to be in cinemas so that people can sit there together and watch this thing happen.”

The original series ran on Netflix for six seasons from 2013 to 2022 and, after years of speculation, a “Peaky Blinders” film was officially announced in June 2024. Cillian Murphy will return as star and producer and Tom Harper is set to direct.

Knight boasted about the film and its flashy lineup of a-listers, adding that production recently wrapped in December.

“We wrapped on December 13th,” Knight said. “We’ve got Barry Keoghan, Tim Roth, Rebecca Ferguson, and obviously Cillian Murphy and Stephen Graham. And I have to say, it is mind-blowingly good.”

Upon the film’s announcement, Murphy said his time as Tommy Shelby “wasn’t finished with me,” adding that it was, “very gratifying to be recollaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of ‘Peaky Blinders.’ This is one for the fans.”

Plot details for the film remain under wraps, but the original series was set in early 20th-century England and followed a tight-knit group of gangsters navigating Birmingham’s deadly world of organized crime.

“When I first directed ‘Peaky Blinders’ over 10 years ago, we didn’t know what the series would become, but we did know that there was something in the alchemy of the cast and the writing that felt explosive,” Harper said upon the film’s official announcement. “‘Peaky’ has always been a story about family – and so it’s incredibly exciting to be reuniting with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences across the world on Netflix.”
