Space was held by Cynthia Erivo while accepting Out’s Out100 Icon Award on Wednesday night in Los Angeles. The “Wicked” star paid homage to her and Ariana Grande’s viral “holding space” interview with the magazine’s Tracy E. Gilchrist.
“According to queer media, I have been all over your social media,” Erivo said to the crowd, adding, “I don’t want you to grow too tired of me. There’s a [‘Wicked’] part two on the way, and we really need to hold space for that and feel the power in that.”
Before leaving the stage, as her “Defying Gravity” from the “Wicked” soundtrack boomed through the speakers, Erivo grabbed the mic and sang along for a snippet. You can watch that here.
Erivo then reunited with Gilchrist to watch drag queen Pattie Gonia’s lip sync performance of – what else? – “Defying Gravity.”
Also at the event, Sheryl Lee Ralph delivered an emotional speech when presented with the Advocate of the Year award.
“I am a believer in the power of unity,” the “Abbott Elementary” star said. “The world may try to divide us, but our strength has always been in our ability to stand together, to lift one another and to remind each other that love — at its core — is unstoppable.”
Other honorees spotted at the party were Erivo’s longtime partner Lena Waithe, Shangela, Margaret Cho, Trixie Mattel, Olympian Tom Daley and his Oscar-winning husband Dustin Lance Black, Zaya Wade with dad Dwyane Wade and stepmom Gabrielle Union, professional race car driver and Ali Forney Center major gift officer Travis Shumake, Law Roach and Nina West.
The guest list also included Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Marissa Bode, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Chris Perfetti, Mae Martin, Orville Peck, Harper Steele, Colton Underwood, Kevin McHale, Symone, Gigi Gorgeous, Lisa Ann Walter and Gigi Goode..
