The FX comedy series “English Teacher” has been renewed for Season 2, Variety has learned.
The series originally debuted on FX and Hulu back in September 2024 to positive reviews. Brian Jordan Alvarez created the series and also stars. Along with Alvarez, the cast includes Stephanie Koenig, Enrico Colantoni, Sean Patton and Carmen Christopher.
“’English Teacher’ was one of the most critically acclaimed new shows of 2024 and we are grateful to the producers, writers, cast, directors and crew for the show’s creative excellence,” said Nick Grad, president of FX Entertainment. “We look forward to the new season.”
The news comes following sexual assault allegations against Alvarez made by Jon Ebeling, his former friend and co-star from “The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo,” a 2016 webseries Alvarez produced and starred in. Ebeling first made his allegations public with an Instagram story post in August before expanding on the issue in an article published by New York Magazine in December. In the report, Ebeling also alleges that “English Teacher” writer and star Koenig played a role in upholding his harmful dynamic with Alvarez.
When the report was first published, a spokesperson for FX said, “We reviewed the allegations presented to us by another media outlet prior to the show’s launch. Mr. Ebeling never reached out to us with any concerns. We will have no further comment at this time.”
FX made no mention of the allegations in its announcement of the renewal.
Alvarez stars in the series as Evan Marquez, described as “a high school teacher in Austin, Texas who often finds himself at the intersection of the personal, professional and political aspects of working at a high school. Over the first season, Evan navigates his relationships, his students and his fellow faculty and tries to answer the question: can you really be your full self at your job?”
Alvarez is an executive producer on the series in addition to creating it and starring. Additional executive producers include Paul Simms, Jonathan Krisel, Dave King, Kathryn Dean, Jake Bender and Zach Dunn. FX Productions is the studio.
