Spotify and DC are bringing back the tortured soul of Batman/Bruce Wayne, voiced by actor Colman Domingo, in a second season of “Batman Unburied.”
“Batman Unburied: Fallen City” is set to premiere Nov. 26 exclusively on Spotify — promising to take listeners deeper into the Dark Knight’s history. The audio streamer released the first 10-episode season of “Batman Unburied” in 2022, with Winston Duke voicing the title role, and the show topped Spotify’s charts at the time.
Filmmaker and comic book writer David S. Goyer created the series and serves as executive producer. “Batman Unburied” reimagines the superhero in a world in which Wayne is a Black man instead of the rich white scion of one of Gotham’s elite families.
“This story, one that explores Bruce losing a friend and an emotional new discovery about his parents’ death, was exciting and challenging,” Domingo said in a statement. “I can’t wait for listeners to experience the twists and turns awaiting them.”
Here’s the description for “Batman Unburied: Fallen City”: As Gotham City is plagued by seismic tremors, Bruce Wayne and Harvey Dent launch a social program that rattles the city’s elites yet earns praise from the city’s newest masked figure: the Oracle of Gotham. But when Harvey goes missing, Batman is forced to descend into the city’s labyrinthian underground, uncovering a horrific conspiracy by a secret society that has ruled Gotham for ages, one that has ties to his parents’ tragic murder. While Two-Face works to puppeteer the strings of law and order, Batman must defend his life — and his city — before everything he knows and loves turns to rubble.
In addition to Domingo, “Batman Unburied: Fallen City” stars Gina Rodriguez (Barbara Gordon) and Jason Isaacs (Alfred Pennyworth), alongside Morena Baccarin (Allie), André Holland (Harvey Dent/Two-Face), Cheech Marin (Jim Gordon), Tahar Rahim (The Patriarch) and Alan Ruck (Coby Williamson).
In the first season of “Batman Unburied,” a serial killer known as The Harvester terrorizes Gotham City, but Batman (Duke) is not coming to the rescue. In fact, Bruce Wayne has no memory of being the Caped Crusader at all. Instead, Bruce is a forensic pathologist, performing the autopsy on the latest victim when he’s attacked by the killer himself. As Bruce’s obsession with the Harvester consumes him, Dr. Thomas Wayne, head of Gotham City Hospital, orders his son to take medical leave and seek treatment from an unusual psychologist, Dr. Hunter. With Batman missing in action, Detective Barbara Gordon (Rodriguez) is left with no other choice but to seek help from Gotham’s second smartest detective: The Riddler (voiced by Hasan Minhaj).
“Batman Unburied: Fallen City” was written and executive produced by Saladin Ahmed, alongside Jess Carson and Meghan Fitzmartin; and directed by Alex Kemp. Executive producers include Goyer, Keith Levine, and Gracie Wheelan of Phantom Four; producers are Chica Barbosa, Alex Kemp, and Winnie Kemp of Wolf at the Door Studios. The series was also produced in association with Shaleen Desai, Tyler Dorson and Peter Girardi of Warner Bros.’s Blue Ribbon Content, and Spotify Studios executive producers Liz Gateley and Rachel Wolf. Executives in charge of production for DC are Mike Pallotta and Victor Diaz.
Music for the series is composed by Jonathan Snipes. Music from “Batman Unburied” will be available on Spotify starting in December.
Spotify also has released two related DC audio series set in the Batman universe: “The Riddler: Secrets in the Dark,” starring Minhaj as the Riddler and Colman as Batman, and “Harley Quinn and The Joker” starring Christina Ricci and Billy Magnussen (with Justin Hartley voicing Batman).
