‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ CinemaCon Footage: Hewitt Is Back

Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. are back at the scene of the crime. The ’90s icons — and stars of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” — returned in the blood-soaked trailer for the sequel to the 1997 slasher.

Now, the hook-wielding fisherman has found a new generation to torture. Attendees of CinemaCon got the first-ever look at Sony’s “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” which opens as a picture-perfect young couple (portrayed by franchise newcomers Madelyn Cline and Joshua Orpin) is enjoying a night of self-care — including a calming bubble bath and noise-canceling headphones for Cline’s character. However, all this rest and relaxation takes a deadly turn as a cloaked killer enters the premises.

The sequel follows five friends who inadvertently cause a deadly car accident and cover up their involvement, making a pact to keep it a secret rather than face the consequences. A year later, their past comes back to haunt them and they’re forced to confront the reality that someone, indeed, knows what they did last summer. And that person is hell-bent on revenge.

Of course, this seaside town is no stranger to such slaughterings and bloodshed. As they’re one-by-one stalked by the slasher, the friends discover this has happened before — and they turn to two survivors of the legendary Southport Massacre of 1997 for help.

“This isn’t the first time there has been violence like this in Southport,” Prinze tells a packed courthouse in the trailer, which isn’t yet available to the public. Later in the footage, Hewitt asks the youngsters, “I just have one question… what did you do last summer?”

In the original “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” four teens from a small seaside town are stalked — one at a time — by a hook-wielding killer one year after covering up a car accident that was believed to be fatal. The film became a box office success with $125 million globally and spawned the 1998 sequel “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” with Hewitt and Prinze Jr. As for the “I Know What You Did” franchise, there was also the straight-to-video reboot “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer” and Amazon Prime TV series “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”

Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (“Thor: Love and Thunder,” “Do Revenge,” “Someone Great,” is directing the film from a script she co-wrote with Sam Lansky. Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, Jonah Hauer-King and Chase Sui Wonders are rounding out the cast. “I Know What You Did Last Summer” will, fittingly, hit theaters over the summer on July 18, 2025.
