Icelandair has announced a growth of its European network with the inauguration of new scheduled flights from Iceland to Edinburgh in Scotland and Malaga in Spain. The two new destinations join a growing list of new cities being served by the Reykjavik-based carrier in 2025, with new routes to Istanbul and Miami previously announced.
Flights to all four new destinations will commence later in 2025, with services to the two newest destinations, Edinburgh and Malaga, beginning in September 2025. The airline will offer either three or four flights a week to Edinburgh starting September 12, 2025, through to April 12, 2026. According to the carrier, “The flight times for the route ensure that passengers can connect seamlessly onto Icelandair’s extensive global network. The city is one of the most popular tourist cities in Northern Europe and is often mentioned among the most beautiful.”
The new services to Scotland’s capital city join those to another Scottish city, Glasgow, which Icelandair has traditionally served for many years since the 1960s.
In terms of its newest Spanish destination of Malaga, in the province of Andalusia in southern Spain, Icelandair will offer one or two flights a week from September 6, 2025, to May 30, 2026, with a flight time of four hours and 45 minutes. The region is known for its “rich culture, history, and sunny beaches,” states the carrier. Malaga joins flights to Madrid, Barcelona and Tenerife on the company’s route network to Spain.
“We are delighted to expand our selection of winter destinations by launching flights to Malaga and Edinburgh,” said Bogi Nils Bogason, President and CEO of Icelandair. “It is especially fitting to add the Scottish capital this year, 80 years since our first flight between Iceland and Scotland, which was also the first international flight of an Icelandic airline.”
“For the first time in our history, we are announcing four new destinations during the winter season, in line with our strategy to grow outside the peak summer season. With the addition of newer and more efficient aircraft to the fleet, we open opportunities for a larger winter schedule. This way, we can better utilize our infrastructure during the winter and at the same time contribute to decreased seasonality in Icelandic tourism.”
Elsewhere across its network, due to high demand, Icelandair’s flight schedule to Nashville has been extended into January 2026, and flights to Hamburg have been extended through October 2025. Additionally, frequency has also been increased to Alicante, Barcelona, and Brussels.
Icelandair currently operates a fleet of 46 aircraft comprising a mix of Boeing and Airbus aircraft, plus De Havilland Canada DHC-8 turboprop for regional and domestic operations. The airline currently serves 64 routes to 65 destinations across 22 countries. It operates a major Europe to North America hub and spoke network via Reykjavik, a strategy that fellow Icelandic carrier PLAY has recently largely walked away from as it focuses on more point-to-point operations from Iceland to European destinations and ACMI (Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, Insurance) wet-lease operations with a fleet of ten Airbus planes.
