Japan’s Skymark Airlines has placed an order for six Boeing 737-8 aircraft as part of its strategy to modernize its fleet for future growth.
The order was approved by the airline’s Board of Directors on May 22, 2025, and later announced in a filing by the airline on the same day.
According to Skymark, the order represents the company’s long-term strategy to “renew the fleet for the future growth of the company in the Air Transportation business”.
The new aircraft will be equipped with CFM International LEAP-1B engines and deliveries are expected to start in the fiscal year 2030.
Each aircraft has a list price of around ¥23.9 billion (approximately $159 million USD), but the airline indicated that the final price will reflect negotiated discounts.
Skymark has chosen not to reveal the final purchase price due to a request from the contract partner. Nevertheless, the total investment is projected to exceed 30% of the company’s net assets as of March 2025, meeting disclosure requirements under Japanese financial laws.
“This order is to enable the company’s medium-to-long term business plan to be executed in a stable manner,” the airline stated in the filing, highlighting that this acquisition will not change its previously announced earnings forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2026.
The order comes as the airline expects ongoing growth in the current fiscal year. Skymark has projected operating revenues of ¥117.3 billion ($782 million USD) and a net income of ¥1.2 billion ($8 million USD) for the year ending March 31, 2026, an increase from ¥108.8 billion ($726 million USD) in operating revenues but a decrease from ¥2.1 billion ($14 million USD) in net income from the previous fiscal year.
