Martin Freeman, Jack Lowden Set for West End Run of ‘The Fifth Step’

“Slow Horses” star Jack Lowden and Emmy winner Martin Freeman are teaming up for the West End transfer of David Ireland‘s “The Fifth Step,” set to bow at London’s @sohoplace theater for an 11-week limited engagement beginning in May. Director Finn den Hertog is reimagining the piece for the intimate in-the-round space.

The drama, which follows the twelve-step journey of Alcoholics Anonymous, centers on two men: James (Freeman), a long-time member of the program who agrees to mentor newcomer Luka (Lowden). Over cups of black coffee, the pair forge a fragile bond through shared experiences. But as Luka approaches the critical fifth step of the program, which demands complete honesty, both men must confront dangerous secrets from their past – revelations that could either strengthen their recovery or send them spiraling back toward addiction.

Freeman, who recently won an International Emmy for “The Responder,” said: “I’m really looking forward to performing this brilliantly funny, unsettling, unexpected play. David Ireland is something quite special and Jack Lowden is an actor I have tremendous respect for and am looking forward to working with him.”

Lowden, who originated the role of Luka at the 2024 Edinburgh International Festival under the National Theatre of Scotland banner, added: “To just be in the room again with David and Finn — two dangerously talented individuals — is a gift in itself,” he said. “But to now add Martin to the mix, an actor of black belt level skill and a hero of mine, just tops it. I can’t wait for more people to experience ‘The Fifth Step.’”

“After a relatively short run with the National Theatre of Scotland last year, having an opportunity to revisit and re-imagine this play for the West End is hugely exciting. I know audiences are in for something genuinely special,” den Hertog said. “David has always been one of my favourite theater artists – truly a master of his craft – and his trademark caustic wit, irreverence and subversiveness are out in full force in ‘The Fifth Step.’”

The two-hander is produced by Neal Street Productions, Playful Productions and National Theatre of Scotland in association with Nica Burns.

Venue founder Nica Burns said: “We are so excited to be welcoming David Ireland’s fantastic play performed by two outstanding actors. The production will thrill in the intense intimacy of the @sohoplace auditorium. It is a perfect fit.”

Previews begin May 10, with opening night set for May 19. The limited run concludes July 26, with 15% of all tickets priced at £25 ($31) to ensure accessibility.
