A large fire has erupted at an aerospace facility in Abington Township, located in Montgomery County near Philadelphia, according to the local police department.
On February 17, 2025, at 21:35 local time, Abington police and several fire departments rushed to an incident at SPS Technologies, located at 301 Highland Ave Jenkintown, police officials announced in a statement.
SPS Technologies describes itself as a developer, manufacturer and global supplier of aerospace fasteners and precision components.
To the police, witnesses reported an explosion within the building, with flames visible inside the warehouse structure. The building was quickly evacuated, and all employees were confirmed safe.
When firefighters arrived, they found an active fire breaching through the roof of the building, along with multiple explosions occurring inside. The evacuation was successful, and there were no injuries reported among the employees present.
Due to the fire’s intensity, a second alarm was called at 21:50 local time, escalating to a third alarm approximately 30 minutes later, according to Abington police. As conditions continued to intensify, a fourth alarm was issued at 01:11 local time, bringing additional resources to the site. In total, 68 fire companies responded to the incident.
On February 18, 2025, Abington police issued an updated statement declaring that the fire at SPS Technologies “remains active and investigations are ongoing”. HazMat teams, along with personnel from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), are actively monitoring the air quality and runoff water both at the site and in the surrounding area.
Earlier, Montgomery County police had announced that the Abington Township Emergency Operations Center and Jenkintown Emergency Management were advising all residents and businesses in the locations below to voluntarily evacuate within the hour, due to the changing conditions of air quality. Police officials have confirmed that there are no threats to public safety so far.
