Movistar+ Unveils Pedro Almodóvar Docuseries Hosted by Los Javis

This June, Movistar Plus+ will unveil “Pedro x Javis,” a three-part documentary series paying tribute to the life and work of celebrated Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar. Created and hosted by celebrated filmmakers Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, known locally as Los Javis, the series blends documentary storytelling with musical performances and reimagined scenes from Almodóvar’s films in a bold new format.

At the heart of “Pedro x Javis” is an intimate, in-depth conversation between the three directors. Filmed over several days, their exchanges are rich with unexpected confessions, emotional memories, and previously unrevealed insights into the two-time Academy Award winner’s creative journey. “I think I’ve talked too much,” Almodóvar wryly commented on the process.

The series features contributions from many of Almodóvar’s most iconic collaborators, including actresses Penélope Cruz, Julieta Serrano, Rossy de Palma, Bibiana Fernández, Loles León, Carmen Machi, Lola Dueñas and Leonor Watling. It also includes appearances by Antonio Banderas and long-time creative partners such as his brother and El Deseo boss Agustín Almodóvar, Esther García, cinematographer José Luis Alcaine and composer Alberto Iglesias.

In addition to interviews, “Pedro x Javis” celebrates Almodóvar’s legacy with vivid musical numbers and reenactments of his most iconic film moments. These segments feature performances by Amaia, Nathy Peluso, Guitarricadelafuente, Luz Casal, Albert Pla, Raül Refree and Antonio Banderas, who reinterpret songs from Almodóvar’s films in visually striking new settings.

Spanning three episodes titled “Amigas y madres,” “Ley y deseo” and “Muerte y cine,” the documentary explores themes central to Almodóvar’s work while tracing his journey from a young man in La Mancha to one of cinema’s most influential voices.

The visual identity of the series is crafted by Ignasi Monreal, who designed the poster, credits and sets, incorporating original props and furniture from Almodóvar’s films.

Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, the creative duo behind “Veneno,” “La Mesías” and “Paquita Salas,” serve as producers and hosts. The team also includes Brays Efe and Paloma Rando as screenwriters, Guillermo Mendo as co-director, Uri Barcelona as director of photography, Celia Cuéllar as editor, Leila Rodríguez as art director and Álex de Lucas as music director. Executive producers are Domingo Corral, Pilar Robla and Custodio Pastor.

Reflecting on the experience, Calvo and Ambrossi shared: “It’s a privilege to have developed this project, which allowed us to spend many hours with Pedro. Every moment with him has been a lesson and an honor. This is a very special tribute to the director who has influenced us most. In Pedro x Javis, our worlds collide in a format that blends what we love most about television and cinema. It’s also the first entertainment project from Suma Content, something we’ve always dreamed of doing, and we’re thrilled with the result.”

Executive producer and outgoing Movistar+ director of fiction and entertainment Domingo Corral, added: “I dare say that Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi have created a new format, a documentary series that merges the language of reality television with that of cinema. They approach it with great emotion and deep admiration for one of the greatest contemporary filmmakers: Pedro Almodóvar.”

“Pedro x Javis” is a Movistar Plus+ original production in collaboration with Los Javis’ label, Suma Content.
