Mubi has already swooped on a Cannes 2025 competition title, acquiring Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value” for the U.K., Ireland, Latin America, Turkey and India.
Directed by Trier and co-written by Trier and long-time collaborator Eskil Vogt (“The Worst Person in the World”, “Oslo, August 31st”), the film stars Renate Reinsve (“The Worst Person in the World”), Stellan Skarsgård (“Dune”), Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas (“A Beautiful Life”) and Elle Fanning (“A Complete Unknown”). Trier’s sixth film — which mk2 Films is handling sales for — is described as an “intimate and moving exploration of family, memories, and the reconciliatory power of art.”
“Sentimental Value” marks the second time Mubi has worked with Trier, the arthouse distributor and streamer having released “The Worst Person in the World” in the U.K., Ireland, India and Turkey.
It’s also the first Cannes 2025 buy for a company that become a prolific acquirer of Cannes titles over the last few years. In 2024, Mubi picked up “The Substance” ahead of the festival, helping Coralie Fargeat’s body horror become a box office hit and Oscar-winning awards season favourite.
In what could be a sign of a busy market to come for the fast-rising distributor, Mubi announced it had bought “Sentimental Value” in the middle of the Cannes press conference and merely seconds after it was announced as being part of the 2025 lineup by festival head Thierry Fremaux.
The film is produced by Maria Ekerhovd for Mer Film and Andrea Berentsen Ottmar for Eye Eye Pictures in Norway. As a Norwegian, French, German, Danish, and Swedish co-production, the co-producers are Nathanael Karmitz for MK Productions and Juliette Schrameck for Lumen Production in France; Janine Jackowski and Jonas Dornbach for Komplizen Film in Germany; Sisse Graum Jørgensen for Zentropa in Denmark and Lizette Jonjic for Zentropa Sweden, as well as Film i Väst, Oslo Filmfond and Mediefondet Zefyr.
The film is also backed by BBC Film in the UK, with Eva Yates as executive producer, as well as Alas Film and Storyline.
