National Codex Alimentarius Committee capacity strengthened in Sierra Leone. | WHO

Sierra Leone’s National Codex Committee (NCC) enhanced its capacity to engage in national, regional, and international Codex activities, contributing to stronger food safety governance and public health protection. This achievement was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the NCC, with technical support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and funding from the Codex Trust Fund Secretariat.

Since its establishment in 2017, the NCC had not received formal capacity-building opportunities. Strengthening the committee’s skills and operational framework was essential for improving food safety standards, addressing technical challenges, and fostering effective participation in Codex processes.

In December 2024, the NCC conducted two capacity-building workshops in Freetown, Sierra Leone, from December 5–7 and 10–12. The training sessions focused on equipping 35 NCC members and stakeholders with the knowledge and skills to use Codex online tools effectively. This hands-on training complemented the development and validation of a procedural manual, which now serves as a key guide for Codex work in Sierra Leone.

The training and procedural manual development marked a turning point for the NCC, enabling its members to perform technical analyses, participate in discussions, and make informed decisions to improve food safety systems.

Food safety is a critical component of public health and economic development. By strengthening the capacity of its Codex Committee, Sierra Leone is taking a significant step toward aligning its food safety standards with international best practices. This initiative also supports global efforts to ensure safe and nutritious food for all.

The achievements of the NCC highlight the power of collaboration and targeted support in driving impactful outcomes. With its newly acquired tools and skills, the NCC is well-positioned to lead Sierra Leone’s efforts to improve food safety, protect public health, and contribute meaningfully to international Codex initiatives.
