'Neighbours' Canceled Again, Ending Amazon's Two-Year Revival

‘Neighbours’ Canceled Again, Ending Amazon’s Two-Year Revival

The long-running Australian soap opera “Neighbours” is set to end its run once again, with the final episode scheduled to air in December 2025. The announcement comes barely two years after Amazon rescued the series from cancellation, marking a bittersweet end to the show’s 40-year legacy.

The beloved series, which launched the careers of global superstars Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, and Margot Robbie, has been chronicling the lives and dramas of Melbourne’s fictional Erinsborough residents since its inception.

Executive producer Jason Herbison acknowledged the show’s recent successes under Amazon’s stewardship, including consistent Top 10 rankings in the U.K. and a 2024 Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Daytime Series. “Audiences all around the world have loved and embraced ‘Neighbours’ for four decades,” Herbison said.

Despite the cancellation, Herbison remained optimistic about future possibilities for the residents of Ramsay Street. “We believe there are more stories of the residents of Ramsay Street to tell in the future,” he stated, while expressing gratitude to Amazon MGM Studios for their role in bringing the iconic series to new global audiences.

The announcement was made via the show’s official social media channels, bringing an end to what has been a remarkable resurrection story in television history. “New episodes from the 40th anniversary season will continue to air on Prime Video and Ten four times a week until the end of the year, with all the big soapie twists and turns that our viewers love,” the “Neighbours” handle posted on X while announcing that the show will be “resting from December 2025.”

In 2022, the series was canceled after 37 seasons. It was revived months later, finding a new home on Amazon’s AVOD service Freevee, which picked up the rights from “Neighbours” producer and distributor Fremantle. Here is an in-depth piece on how the iconic show came back from the dead.

This second cancellation marks the conclusion of a series that has become deeply embedded in the fabric of international television culture, particularly in Australia and the U.K.
