Netflix has announced its upcoming adaptation of “El mapa de los anhelos,” the acclaimed novel by Spanish author Alice Kellen, originally published by Editorial Planeta.
The story will be brought to the screen as a miniseries written by Isa Sánchez (“When No One Sees Us”) and produced by the BBC’s Spanish partner outfit Brutal Media, demonstrating an ongoing interest in the Spanish media landscape by the British broadcaster. Previous Brutal Media titles include “Bank Under Siege” and “Welcome to Eden.”
The miniseries tells the moving story of Greta, a young woman who believes her sole purpose in life is to save her sister Lucy from leukemia by donating her stem cells. However, when Lucy passes away, Greta is left shattered and directionless. Before her death, Lucy creates “El mapa de los anhelos,” a heartfelt game that encourages Greta to confront her grief and discover her own path. Along the way, she meets Will, a mysterious young man haunted by his own past. The series explores themes of loss, healing, and whether we can truly love someone else without first loving ourselves.
Author Alice Kellen shared her excitement regarding the project, saying, “’El mapa de los anhelos’ will come to life on screen, and I’m thrilled to embark on this emotional journey that began step by step with the love of my readers. I hope it inspires them as much as it has inspired me.”
Produced by Brutal Media, a leading Spanish production company and the local partner of BBC Studios, the series adds to their growing portfolio of international successes. Their recent titles include Netflix’s first Spanish slasher “The Book Club Murders,” the global hit “Welcome to Eden” and acclaimed documentaries like “Rosa Peral’s Tapes” and “Murder by the Coast.”
