New video reveals the thrill of flying in Alaska — General Aviation News

A new video features “two friends navigating the skies above the rugged peaks” near Talkeetna, Alaska. They maneuver a single-engine Cessna around Denali, North America’s tallest peak, demonstrating “the unique challenges of bush flying in Alaska.”

Professional pilot Joe McAneney and aviation mechanic and photographer Andrew Esola talk about their aerial journey in Episode 3 of KÜHL’s “The Road Less Traveled” video series.

The unpredictable weather, rugged terrain, and isolated airstrips Alaska aviators face tests even the most skilled pilots, according to officials.

“The kind of flying we’re doing here isn’t something you learn in books. Each flight brings new challenges and it gets a little less scary every time, so it quickly becomes addictive to keep pushing that edge,” says Andrew Esola.

The duo follows in the footsteps of legendary pioneers Don Sheldon and Brad Washburn, who mapped the region from the air 75 years ago.

“Aviation is so ingrained in the Alaskan community that it’s hard not to follow in the footsteps of past pioneers. You wonder how to continue their legacy and add to what they left behind,” he added.

You can watch the 10-minute film on YouTube or on KÜHL’s website.

KÜHL is an independent outdoor clothing brand.
