“Reef Builders” Documentary Gets Exclusive First Look at SXSW

Variety has announced an exclusive first look of a new documentary “Reef Builders,” presented by the SHEBA brand, followed by a panel discussion with Auli’i Cravalho on March 9 during SXSW in Austin, Texas.

“Reef Builders” spotlights the inspiring stories of the people behind the Sheba Hope Grows program, one of the world’s largest coral reef restoration programs led by Mars Sustainable Solutions, and the vital role of ocean communities in the move to restore the planet’s coral reefs.

From director and producer, Stephen Shearman and the production team at AMV Stream, formerly Red Studios, as well as actor, environmental advocate and associate producer Auliʻi Cravalho (“Moana,” “Moana 2,” “The Rise,” “Power” and 2024’s “Mean Girls”), the documentary is brought to viewers by the SHEBA brand, as part of its commitment to restore coral reefs around the world.

The panel discussion will include Cravalho and Shearman, as well as Dr. Daniel DeMartini from Kuleana Coral Restoration, Professor David Smith, Senior Director, Mars Sustainable Solutions and Chief Marine Scientist at Mars, and Mindy Barry, Global Vice President, SHEBA. Variety Senior Awards Editor Clayton Davis will moderate.

“As the SHEBA brand, we believe in the power of storytelling to inspire real-world change. It’s this belief that has led to a new chapter of the Sheba Hope Grows program. I’m thrilled for this new documentary which showcases the amazing work taking place to help restore our coral reefs,” said Mindy Barry, Global Vice President, SHEBA. “We’re honored to partner with Variety for an early preview of the film and help this incredible story of hope reach a global audience.”

“Variety cares deeply about the environment and the sustainability of our planet,” said Dea Lawrence, Chief Operating and Marketing Officer, Variety. “We are honored to be able to produce a viewing experience at SXSW for this important documentary, ‘Reef Builders.’”
