Reese Witherspoon recently took to her Instagram story (via People) to set the record straight that Kate Winslet is not the famous actor who no longer speaks to her. The “Walk the Line” Oscar winner recently went viral after telling People magazine that she lost an industry friend because of an awards speech gone wrong. Internet sleuths went digging for the truth, and the social media consensus was that Witherspoon was likely talking about Winslet since she presented an award to her at the BAFTA/LA Cunard Britannia Awards in 2007. Not so fast.
“Hey guys. Just spoke to my very dear friend for years, Kate W. We laughed about this stupidity,” Witherspoon wrote amid the rampant speculation. “Please do not believe the internet. We are good friends and have never had any falling out.”
Witherspoon wrote in another story post: “This is completely UNTRUE …so silly!”
In her original interview, Witherspoon said that she had a falling out with an actor friend after roasting her at an awards ceremony. Witherspoon did not say the actor’s name, but she did admit that the whole situation “haunts me, it literally haunts me.”
“So this friend of mine, who I didn’t really know that well, but she was a very serious, proper actress,” Witherspoon said. “She asked me to give her an award, but I had never been to this award ceremony, so I thought it was like a roast. So I got up and I roasted her.”
“But that was not the tone,” she continued. “The tone was British, elegant, classy and I was like, ‘Remember the time we got laser hair removal?’ I’m still embarrassed about it. [We’re] not friends anymore. I’m not even kidding — we’re not friends anymore! I think she doesn’t like me anymore. I thought it was so funny and it was just, I had the wrong audience. It was pretty bad. Not even kidding, she doesn’t talk to me anymore. Oh well.”
While social media started throwing out Winslet’s name, others observed that might not be the case as Winslet and Witherspoon presented together at the 2016 Oscars. They were also photographed backstage at the event laughing together and hugging. That’s nearly 10 years after Witherspoon presented Winslet with an award, so they clearly remained on good terms in the decade after.
