Netflix’s new animated series “Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance” heads to “Fortnite” Friday with the release of game “Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance – Red vs. Blue.”
Developed by “Gundam” IP owner Bandai Namco Entertainment America and Bungie founder Alexander Seropian’s user-generated content studio Look North World through Unreal Engine for “Fortnite,” the game is described as “a competitive, team-based experience” that allows up to 20 players within each match “to align with either the Zeon or Earth Federation Forces factions and square off.”
“When a match starts, players select their battlefield and deploy into their respective bases to equip themselves with an arsenal of their choosing,” according to the “Red vs. Blue” rules. “The primary objectives are to engage in tactical combat to secure the valuable MS Reactor Power. Factions are allocated a Cache in proximity to their base, and additional Caches are distributed across the terrain. Players acquire MS Reactor Power from the Caches. Teams must strategically collaborate to collect 200 MS Reactor Power, which then lets them activate their faction’s signature Mobile Suit, be it the Gundam EX or ZAKU II (Unidentified Type) Solari and have a devastating effect on the tide of battle.”
In a first for “Fortnite,” “Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance – Red vs. Blue” will include an immersive, first-person cockpit view, giving players the experience as if they were a real “Gundam” pilot in a Mobile Suit.
“Because the Mobile Suits from ‘Gundam’ are so unique and there’s so much awe and presence just in the view — whether you’re watching a show, whether you’re playing with the toys, or whether you’re in the game when the Mobile Suit appears, you can’t miss it, and you immediately want to be in there, piloting it, wrecking the destruction on the scene,” Seropian told Variety.
Per Bandai Namco, the game will include access to a “massive arsenal of popular weapons in each faction’s armory to maximize combat and robot takedowns while minimizing searching, looting, and traversing.” Players will be ranked across the weekly global leaderboards and entered to win in-game currency Vbucks and Gunpla model kits from “Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance.”
Bandai Namco is working with Look North World on prepping future updates for the “Fortnite” game and plotting additions tied to potential future seasons of the Netflix “Gundam” series, while also considering how that fits into the larger “Gundam” franchise — including an upcoming movie.
“We have a lot of beats that are coming up for ‘Gundam’ as an IP: on the animation side, we have some beats coming up on the video game side, for PC/console, we have some beats on the mobile gaming side,” Karim Farghaly, senior vice president of corporate development for Bandai Namco Entertainment America Inc. said. “There are certain new content releases that we’re certainly considering for various types of experiences, depending on the demographic reach.
“‘Gundam’ is a brand that started in 1979. It’s obviously huge in Asia. There’s incredible potential for us in the U.S. market. The response has been phenomenal so far for the show. We expect the ‘Fortnite’ experience to have the same. So I think, depending on the type of universes and new content and spinoffs that we do from the brand, there will be different experiences tied in, for sure. But certainly the content, in terms of linear, the video game content and the toy content, will always be part of this.”
