‘Resident Alien’ Season 4 Casts Stephen Root as Harry’s Father


The out of this world talented Stephen Root is joining “Resident Alien” Season 4 in a guest star role, Variety has learned exclusively.

Root will play the father of Harry (Alan Tudyk). According to the official character description, Root’s character will appear to his son in human form and “push Harry to go back to his evil alien roots.”

“Resident Alien” was renewed for Season 4 in June 2024, with the show set to move from Syfy to fellow NBCUniversal cabler USA Network. The new season does not have a premiere date at the time of this publishing. Along with Tudyk and Root, the cast also includes Sara Tomko, Alice Wetterlund, Levi Fiehler, Meredith Garretson, Corey Reynolds, and Elizabeth Bowen.

Root is a highly versatile actor with a strong resume across television and film. He received an Emmy nomination in 2019 for best supporting actor in a comedy for his work on the HBO series “Barry,” with Root starring in the show across its four season run. He is also lending his voice to the upcoming “King of the Hill” revival at Hulu, having voiced multiple characters during the show’s original 13 seasons at Fox. Root’s other TV credits include “NewsRadio,” “Succession,” “Boardwalk Empire,” and “The Man in the High Castle.” He is known for film roles including “Office Space,” “Dodgeball,” “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” “Get Out,” and “Trumbo.”

He is repped by Gersh and Brillstein Entertainment Partners.

The official description of Season 4 of “Resident Alien” states:

“The fourth season starts with Harry (Tudyk) and his baby Bridget stuck in prison on the Grey Moonbase, while a shape-shifting Alien called a Mantid (also Tudyk) has taken over his body on Earth passing himself off as the real Harry Vanderspeigle. Harry manages to escape the Greys and arrives back on Earth for a showdown with the Mantid Alien but soon finds he may not have what he needs to finish the job. Asta (Tomko) and D’arcy (Wetterlund) struggle to keep a secret from Ben (Fiehler) and Kate (Garretson), who are both desperate to find answers to what has been happening to them. Sheriff Mike (Reynolds) and Deputy Liv (Bowen) attempt to solve some mysterious deaths in Patience that Sheriff Mike is beginning to think aren’t caused by anything human.”

“Resident Alien” is based on the Dark Horse comics of the same name by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse. It was developed for television by Chris Sheridan, who also executive produces. Mike Richardson and Keith Goldberg of Dark Horse Entertainment, Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank of Amblin TV, Robert Duncan McNeill, and Nastaran Dibai also executive produce. The series is produced by UCP in association with Amblin TV and Dark Horse Entertainment.
