BAFTA-winning actor Douglas Henshall has signed on to “Angh,” a new independent feature film set in 1960s Nagaland, eastern India.
“Angh” marks the feature directorial debut of Theja Rio, whose award-winning short films have already made waves on the festival circuit, including at Clermont-Ferrand, IndieLisboa and Mumbai. Rio is producing alongside Nancy Nisa Beso and Bernardo Angeletti through their respective banners Winter Hymns Films and Undercover Squirrel.
Henshall, best known for his role in BBC’s “Shetland,” will play a pivotal role in the period drama, which aims to showcase an untold chapter of Naga history. In 1960s Nagaland, a proud Konyak chief struggles to protect his dying traditions when an American missionary arrives with promises of aid that threaten his people’s identity. As his wife’s health deteriorates and famine looms, he and his mute son must make an impossible choice between survival and staying true to their ancestral ways.
The production features an ensemble cast of first-time local actors from Nagaland. Shot entirely on 16mm film, the production aims to create a textured, authentic aesthetic that enhances the storytelling. The project represents a milestone for Naga cinema, blending international filmmaking expertise with local narratives and talent.
The production has assembled an international crew including Polish cinematographer Adam Pietkiewicz, production designer Margarida Caetano Dias, costume designer Manisha Garg, and makeup designer Priya Lahon. Veteran line producer Niraj Kumar Pandey is overseeing production logistics.
“We are incredibly excited to bring this story to life,” Rio said. “Nagaland’s history, culture, and untold narratives hold immense cinematic potential, and this film is our way of sharing them with the world. Shooting on 16mm, collaborating with local actors, and having Douglas Henshall as part of this journey makes this project truly special. We believe it will be a meaningful addition to the cinematic landscape.”
Producer Beso added, “This film is deeply personal to us. We are telling a story rooted in Nagaland’s history, but with themes that are universal. Bringing together local talent, a young international crew, and shooting on 16mm has been a rare and special experience. Having Douglas Henshall join us only strengthens our vision, and we can’t wait to share this film with the world.”
Winter Hymns Film is a production house from Nagaland known for its award-winning short films, while Undercover Squirrel is a story-driven media company focused on amplifying diverse and underrepresented voices.
The film is expected to hit the international festival circuit upon completion.
