As promised, SZA dropped four new songs on Sunday, ahead of her appearance with Kendrick Lamar during the Super Bowl Halftime show, creating a sort of second deluxe edition of her Grammy-winning “SOS” album; the deluxe edition is titled “Lana.” While previously unreleased and technically new, the songs are mostly updated versions of tracks that are at least couple of years old and have been floating around the internet for some time.
The updated version includes “Joni” featuring Don Toliver, “Take You Down,” “Open Arms (just SZA)” and “PSA.”
Released in December, two years after the original release of “SOS,” the “Lana” version brought the album back to the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart for the 12th non-consecutive week. Its release coincided with the debut of “One of Them Days,” her first feature film co-starring Keke Palmer.
SZA previously promised that an updated version of “Lana” would arrive on Jan. 6, though that date came and went. After one fan called her “unprofessional” on social media, SZA responded, “Cause sample clearances always happen within the preferred time frame lmao? I shoulda NEVER tried to give yall what u asked for . It wasn’t professional . It was KINDNESS AND A WILLINGNESS TO APPEASE u lunatics.”
