Ukrainian drones force Russian airports to restrict flights

Ukrainian drones force Russian airports to restrict flights

Several Russian airports, including those in Moscow, were forced to restrict flight operations after Ukraine launched a series of drone attacks.

Reports in Russia began emerging on June 9, 2025, that the Russian Federal Air Transport Agency, Rosaviatsiya, has temporarily restricted the arrival and departure of aircraft.

Local news agencies reported that the Russian Ministry of Defense advised that 102 Ukrainian drones were destroyed overnight in the latest wave of attacks.

Restrictions were placed on Moscow’s four airports, Sheremetyevo (SVO), Domodedovo (DME), Vnukovo (VKO), and Zhukovsky (ZIA). Pulkovo Airport (LED) in St Petersburg also experienced disruptions.

Among the other airports where restrictions were brought in were Izhevsk Airport (IJK), Kazan Airport (KSN), Kirov Airport (KVX), Nizhnekamsk Airport (NBC) and Samara Kurumoch Airport (KUF).

The Ministry of Defense said no Russian airports were damaged in Ukraine’s latest drone attack with nearly half destroyed over the Bryansk region.

On June 10, 2025, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President of Ukraine, said that Russia launched Shahed drones and cruise and ballistic missiles throughout the night.

“Today was one of the largest attacks on Kyiv. Odesa, Dnipro region, and Chernihiv region were also targeted,” said President Zelensky.

There were also reports that fuel tanks by Boryspil International Airport (KBP) in Kyiv were hit resulting in a fire.

According to the Ukrainian leader, “Russia used 315 drones in the attack, including 250 Shaheds, and seven missiles – two of which were North Korean-made ballistic missiles”.

13 people were injured in a strike at a maternity hospital in Odessa, along with an unconfirmed number of fatalities.

“It is vital that the response to this and other similar Russian attacks is not silence from the world, but concrete action. Action from America, which has the power to force Russia into peace. Action from Europe, which has no alternative but to be strong,” said President Zelensky.

He added: “Action from others around the world who called for diplomacy and an end to the war – and whom Russia has ignored. There must be strong pressure for the sake of peace.”
