Dinesh Vijan and Maddock Films‘ epic historical saga “Chhaava,” starring Vicky Kaushal, continues its unstoppable run at the box office, grossing INR7.11 billion ($83.5 million) in India alone.
The only other film to have crossed this milestone in films originally made in the Hindi language in India – as opposed to films made in southern Indian languages like “Baahubali 2,” “Pushpa 2,” “RRR,” “K.G.F 2” and “Kalki 2989 AD” – is Maddock Films’ “Stree 2.” “Chhaava” has also collected over $10.5 million in overseas markets. The total worldwide collection stands at $94 million.
“When we began work on ‘Chhaava,’ we knew we had something special, a story rooted in legacy and emotion. But to see it resonate across continents and cross INR800 crore [$94 million] worldwide is humbling. This film belongs to the audience, and this success is a testament to their love,” Vijan said.
“Chhaava” stars Vicky Kaushal as the legendary Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. The project marks Maddock Films’ first venture into the historical epic genre and features Kaushal alongside Rashmika Mandanna and Akshaye Khanna. Director Laxman Utekar helms the production, which chronicles the life of Sambhaji Maharaj, who ascended to the throne in 1681.
Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the eldest son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, led the Maratha Empire during a crucial period in Indian history. Known for his military prowess and strategic leadership, Sambhaji’s reign was marked by continuous warfare with the Mughal Empire and other powers. His story is particularly notable for his defense of the Maratha kingdom and his legendary courage in the face of adversity. He was also referred to as Chhaava (lion’s cub).
Maddock enjoyed a blockbuster 2024 with sci-fi rom-com “Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya,” horror-comedy “Munjya” and “Stree 2,” the sequel to 2018 horror-comedy “Stree.” The company recently unveiled a slate of eight interconnected films in the horror-comedy genre set to release over the next four years.
