With Pope Francis’ health continuing to be of concern for Catholics worldwide, the Portuguese Caretos paid their own tribute to the Holy Father with the colourful display.

The mural is of the pope flanked by two Caretos, devil-like figures believed to be of pagan origin that are part of one of the most ancient and traditional carnival celebrations in Portugal.

The carnival is a celebration that has been recognised by UNESCO in 2019 as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
