Watch Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo Perform “Defying Gravity” and More at 2025 Oscars

Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo performed at the 2025 Academy Awards tonight (March 2), where the Wicked co-stars took turns paying tribute to iconic songs from the film’s roots. While accompanied by an orchestra, Ariana Grande sang “Over the Rainbow”—the classic 1939 song written for The Wizard of Oz—in a sparkling red dress meant to evoke Dorothy’s famous ruby slippers, while projections of a starry sky and a rainbow were cast behind her. Next, Erivo sang “Home” from The Wiz in a huge white ballgown adorned with flowers before the Los Angeles skyline. Afterwards, the two reunited to perform a portion of “Defying Gravity” from Wicked together, ending with the floor elevating to lift Erivo into the air. Watch a replay below.

Wicked is nominated for 10 awards at tonight’s Oscars. Grande is in the running for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Galinda “Glinda” Upland, and Erivo is up for Best Actress for her portrayal of Elphaba Thropp. Of course, the film is up for Best Picture as well.
