This season of unpredictable twists on “The Amazing Race” isn’t letting up anytime soon, including a stunning double U-Turn vote in this week’s episode. Variety has an exclusive first look at the gameplay, which has a devastating impact on the relationships between the teams.
The clip from Episode 5, titled “It’s Not Personal, It’s Business,” shows the remaining nine teams as they get a warm welcome from monkeys before being confronted with a difficult choice that will force their cards.
“Two teams will have a monkey on their back after we complete a live double U-Turn vote,” host Phil Keoghan said. “You have the opportunity to slow down another team, forcing them to complete both sides of the detour.”
So far, this “Season of Surprises” has featured different twists in every episode, including the fork in the road (which forced teams to choose between two different routes, resulting in two eliminated teams), an intersection that required teams to work together on challenges, and the driver’s seat, in which teams that arrived first were able to determine how much rice teams behind them had to thresh.
Season 37 isn’t the first time a Double U-Turn vote has appeared in the game; back in Season 31, both Colin & Christie and Rachel & Elissa were voted by their fellow contestants and forced to complete both sides of the detour. Rachel & Elissa were ultimately eliminated that episode and, as Keoghan teased in this week’s exclusive clip, the U-Turn vote can make or break a team’s winning streak.
