Bengo, 22 February 2025 – The World Health Organization (WHO) participated in a high-level multisectoral field visit to Bengo led by the Minister of Health, Dr. Sílvia Lutucuta, to assess ongoing efforts in the fight against cholera. The visit included the Governor of Bengo, Antónia Nelumba, the Minister of Environment, Ana Carvalho as well as several deputy ministers, and key international partners, including the World Bank, Africa CDC, UNICEF, and the Red Cross.
The visit commenced at the Provincial Government, where the Multisectoral Technical Commission for the Fight Against Cholera convened.
During this meeting, Dr. Lutucuta emphasized the importance of a coordinated, multisectoral approach to eliminating cholera. The National Directorate of Public Health delivered a detailed presentation on the epidemiological situation nationwide and the implementation of the National Cholera Response Plan. The Government of Bengo also presented updates on the province’s epidemiological status and its operational plan.
During the session, WHO Representative Dr. Zabulon Yoti praised Bengo’s authorities for their successful efforts in reducing cholera cases significantly. He acknowledged the increased presence of WHO field teams in Bengo, which has been instrumental in assisting local authorities. While recognizing the progress made, Dr. Yoti stressed the need for continued efforts across multiple sectors, particularly in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). He reaffirmed WHO’s commitment to supporting the Angolan government at all levels to ensure the complete control of cholera.
The high-level delegation visited Ucua Municipality, where they assessed the functionality of two Cholera Treatment Centers (CTCs), engaged with local health workers, and observed significant improvements in treatment and response efforts. These improvements reflect the province’s intensified efforts to combat the outbreak, supported by key international partners.
Since the beginning of the outbreak, Bengo has recorded a total of 1,810 cases and 71 deaths, with case fatality rate of 3.9%. While these figures show a decline in cases, authorities and partners emphasize the continued need for vigilance, prevention, and community engagement.
