Moviegoers can channel their inner Glinda and Elphaba during sing-along screenings of “Wicked.”
But they’ll have to wait. Interactive showings of Universal’s upcoming movie musical will be offered in roughly 1,000 North American cinemas starting on Dec. 25 — approximately one month after “Wicked” lands on the big screen. Exact plans, including the location count and showtimes, have yet to be finalized.
“Wicked” opens in theaters on Nov. 22, at which time audiences can belt along to classics like “Popular” and “Defying Gravity” at their own peril. Act 1 of the beloved Broadway show also features such memorable tunes as “Dancing Through Life,” “The Wizard and I” and “One Short Day.” Bonus points for theatergoers who can mimic Doctor Dillamond’s goat cry in “Something Bad.” Fans will need to wait until the second movie, which debuts on Nov. 21, 2025, to harmonize on Act 2 favorites like “For Good” and “No Good Deed.”
With these sing-along screenings, “Wicked” is following the music notes of other song-heavy theatrical hits like Hugh Jackman’s “The Greatest Showman” and the Freddie Mercury biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo star in “Wicked,” the big screen version of the long-running Broadway show about everything that happens before Dorothy lands in Oz and saunters down that iconic Yellow Brick Road. The story takes place before, during and after “The Wizard of Oz” and charts the unlikely friendship of Elphaba (later known as the Wicked Witch of the West) and Glinda (eventually dubbed Glinda the Good), which is torn a part by external forces. The film’s ensemble includes Jonathan Bailey as love interest Fiyero, Michelle Yeoh as Shiz University headmaster Madame Morrible, Ethan Slater as Boq of Munchkinland and Bowen Yang as Glinda’s comrade Pfannee.
